DI VARI CREDI (OF VARIOUS CREEDS) – The cloistered female world in the photographs of Sebastiana Papa
Sebastiana Papa’s photography explores the female cloistered community and expresses her interest in every aspect of the female universe. Her fascination with the subject was the inspiration for her Il Femminile di Dio. Riflessioni fotografiche sulla donna, 1964-1995 , a book of photographs about women from all walks of life. Free of all ideological discriminations, the collection in Papa’s book analyses the lifestyle of each of her subjects – religious and non-religious.
This entire exhibition was set into motion by the artist’s love of this topic. Her detailed research into the cloistered life of women is represented by two Leica cameras. She was able to get first-hand accounts of many kinds of life experiences in a variety of religious communities: Catholic nuns in Italy (the Order of Saint Clare and Benedictine nuns in Tuscany; Cistercian and Carmelites in Lazio; Augustinians in Umbria), Orthodox convents (in Ethiopia, Greek rituals in Crete, Coptic rituals in Egypt and Russian rituals in Estonia) as well as Tibetan nuns in India, Buddhist nuns in Myanmar and Taoist nuns in China.
