The Way of the Cross. The Passion of Christ is a cycle of works created by Fernando Botero between 2010 and 2011. The cycle is made up of 27 oil paintings and 34 works on paper. It has been on display in many countries of North and South America as well as in Europe. The exhibit reveals a theme which has been a characteristic of Botero’s work since his childhood and youth in Colombia, immersed in a myriad of religious images in both public and private spheres. Botero has always created sensual worlds inhabited by beings overflowing with immeasurable pleasure and joy. He depicts them through that tranquil and luscious abundance of forms which came to maturity at the end of the 1970s. The soft features, the ideas and forms that seem so stable are entwined with turmoil where grief and tragedy take shape, following a figurative idiom that is the emblem of the Colombian artist’s output without ever abandoning his uniquely distorting gaze.
