Vincenzo Bellini’s NORMA
Norma, Vincenzo Bellini’s operatic masterpiece, will be performed on the stage of Rome’s splendid and evocative Baths of Caracalla until 8 August. Andrea De Rosa is the stage director of this production that also features conductor Gabriele Ferro and the Teatro dell’Opera orchestra who will offer audiences magical, unforgettable moments. The opera’s story tells the tale of two sacrilegious love stories involving two virgin priestesses and Pollione, a Roman proconsul. After having fathered two children with Norma, he seduces the young Adalgisa and plots to take her to Rome against her will. When Norma is faced with this betrayal, she initially decides to kill her children but later sacrifices her life alongside Pollione. The story is a kind of re-interpretation of Euripides’ tragedy Medea, only it is set in Gaul during the early times of Roman conquest of Gaul.
