ARTURO GHERGO. Photographs 1930-1959
Arturo Ghergo was one of the world’s great portrait photographers between 1930 and 1959. All the people who counted at that time could be found in his photography studio on Rome’s Via Condotti. His work is characterised by a special shooting technique and subsequent manipulation of the photos that was quite cutting edge for the times. His shots were very much in vogue and many VIPs competed to be captured by his camera’s lens. His manual touch-ups were authentic works of plastic surgery that were materially carried out on the flesh on film and then dissimulated through the use of ulterior pictorial tools with the skill of an alchemist. Rome’s Palazzo delle Esposizioni is dedicating this personal exhibition to the works of this great artist and offering the public an opportunity to admire fascinating portraits of some of the celebrities of those years.
