ARTE E POLITICA. OPERE DALLA COLLEZIONE #4 (ART AND POLITICS. WORKS FROM THE COLLECTION . INSTALMENT #4)
The fourth appointment in the series of exhibits that aims to promote MACRO’s permanent exhibit, on display in rotation at the halls of the museum, is presenting a group of works linked to the issue of political, social and civil commitment. Beginning with the demolitions in Rome ordered by the Fascist regime during the 1930s immortalized by the paintings of Mario Mafai and the Scuola Romana and followed by the chronicle of street demonstrations recalled by Giulio Turcato’s Comizio (Rally), the exhibition draws its spectators to more recent considerations where contemporary artists break into a more disenchanted attitude towards social and political events. An example of this view is Punizioni (Punishments) by Maurizio Cattelan (the only work on loan from a private collection), who gathered sheets of paper with the words “Fare la lotta in classe è pericoloso” (Fighting in class is dangerous) written on them over and over again by young students like a typical childhood punishment. The artist, assuming the role of teacher, takes a red pen to the sentences – correcting them to read “Fare la lotta di classe è pericoloso” (Class warfare is dangerous).
