Pietrella is famous for his singular painting technique which employs a date stamp instead of the traditional paintbrush. His images result from overlapping the stamped print onto the canvas, indicating the date in which the artist created his work. Each painting holds the memory of the time spent to create the work and registered by Pietrella’s single gestures. In this way, his art is transformed into a progressive accumulation of marks – each stamp remains visible and indelible, preventing the artist from going back over the work and rethinking the image. Different kinds of pressure are used on the date stamp in order for the artist to invent nuances and define the shapes and sizes of his figures which are, for the most part, connected to the imagery of his everyday existence. The artist is also presenting another series of works in charcoal at the MACRO. These were obtained by gradually erasing layers of material and allowing the figure to emerge.
