The Rafael Y. Herman solo exhibit is presented like a gigantic environmental installation in which the works emerge from the dark and are revealed as epiphanies. The poetry of Rafael Y. Herman develops through the dialectics between darkness and light as his perspective gives way to a new approach towards reality that comes into being and evolves in the dark. The Night Illuminates the Night focuses on the work begun in 2010 and completed in 2016. During this period the artist established a dialogue with the great masters of Western tradition who, inspired by biblical and literary sources, have represented the Holy Land over the centuries without ever having been there. Rafael Y. Herman retraces this tradition using his own personal method: taking photographs at night without any electronic aids or digital manipulation in order to disclose what cannot be seen by the naked eye. Like the great masters of the past, Herman chose to put himself in the condition of not being able to see the landscape, regardless of the fact that he was born and raised in the area, and to work in the dark of night.
