This exhibit was organised in collaboration with the Gala-Salvador Dalì Foundation and offers a new view of the great master of Surrealism: the great Spanish artist’s relationship with Italy. Visitors can trace his travels to Italy through the documents, photographs, drawings, letters, projects and items on display and relive the encounters he had to plan out such artistic collaborations like those with Anna Magnani and Luchino Visconti. This exhibit presents the genius of Salvador Dalì, an artist who was capable of taking the bizarreness of his temperament and life and create a fascinating and evocative universe filled with truly unique plastic and literary images.

The Scuderie del Quirinale stables are hosting an extraordinary exhibition featuring approximately 40 paintings (accompanied by a special section dedicated to the artistic environment in which the Venetian master lived and worked), all of which are of the highest quality, on loan from international museums and collections. These works are capable of offering the public a concise yet significant overview of the artistic career of Jacopo Tintoretto. The exhibition focuses upon the three main themes of Tintoretto’s painting: religion, mythology and portrait painting. Among the works on display: the spectacular Miracle of the Slave, painted in 1548, (a painting that was commissioned by the Scuola Grande di San Marco and would firmly establish him as one of the leading Venetian artists of his time) and Christ Carried to the Tomb, painted in 1594 (from the San Giorgio Maggiore Monastery), which is perhaps the last work in which the hand of the master is easily recognized.

The splendid halls of Palazzo Venezia are hosting 140 paintings from all over the world – some of which have never been on display in Italy until now – that reconstructs the art scene in Rome at the time of the great Caravaggio. The works in this exhibition were chosen in such a way as to best represent the complex events that shaped and characterized the art scene in Rome in the early 17^th century in the broadest and significant manner possible. Caravaggio’s painting of Saint Augustine (in Italy for the first time) will also be on display for this extraordinary occasion. The work had disappeared during the mid 19^th century and was recently recovered in a Spanish collection. The fact that it was attributed to Caravaggio unleashed a hard-fought debate.

From 2 December 2011 to 26 February 2012, Rome’s Macro Museum will be hosting the artwork of Carsten Höller, winner of the Enel Contemporanea Award 2011. This award is promoted by Italian energy provider Enel in the sphere of Enel Contemporanea. The work is entitled “Double Carousel with Zöllner Stripes” and it is indeed a double carousel in motion with which the public can interact. The two carousels move in opposite directions at a very slow speed so that spectators can get on and off at will. The carousels look like enormous mills or grindstones with people sitting on them. They come close and then come apart in constant rotation. Carsten Höller has participated in numerous collective and personal exhibitions in some of the world’s most prestigious institutions such as Rotterdam’s Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen and the Kunsthaus Bregenz.
