Mario Giacomelli is considered to be one of the greatest Italian photographers of the 20th century. His Scanno series was purchased back in 1963 by the curator of New York’s MoMA museum. Like Federico Fellini, Giacomelli completely overturned the neo-realistic viewpoint in vogue at the time and introduced a new tonal, dreamy poetry to photography, creating photographic tales that were expressed in both his portraits and landscapes. The first part of the exhibit features series of photographs shot in the 1950’s: from Prime fotografie (First photographs), Nudi (Nudes), Mare (Sea), I Paesaggi (Landscapes), Lourdes, Scanno a Mattatoio (Slaughter at the Slaughterhouse) (1961) and Io non ho mani che mi accarezzino il viso (There are no hands that caress my face) to Studenti (Students) (1977).
